At what point does one need medication for anxiety?

Over the last several years, I have noticed myself feeling more and more uncomfortable in public places… I get very nervous and paranoid; feel flushed and begin sweating. It used to be in more populated places…malls, crowded restaurants, etc., but over the past 2 years or so I noticed that I feel awkward and nervous in even smaller settings. For example, tonight I had to do laundry at a laundromat and even though there were only 2 other people using the facility, I felt almost overwhelmed with nervousness and paranoia. I got very hot and sweaty at one point and had to step outside into cooler air for fear that I was going to pass out.

Can anyone with help me sort this out before approaching a physician? I try to stay away from conventional medicine, but if this problem is going to just continue or get worse, then I may have to break down and see a doctor. Any advice or insight from anyone who suffers from anxiety issues?
Thanks, Neruda. I appreciate your advice.
